Most importers shipping from China to East Africa don't choose their port. They accept whichever one their forwarder quotes by default, or whichever one the cheapest carrier serves. For some cargo and some destinations, that default is fine. For others, it adds cost, time, or risk that a deliberate choice would have avoided.
Mombasa and Dar es Salaam are both major container gateways serving overlapping inland markets. Understanding what each one actually offers โ and where each one falls short โ turns a passive default into an active decision.
Transit Times from China
Both ports are served from Chinese origins via the Indian Ocean route, which makes them among the faster China-Africa destinations. Neither requires a Suez Canal transit or Atlantic routing โ vessels sail directly across the Indian Ocean to arrive on Africa's east coast.
| Port | Direct Service | Via Hub |
|---|---|---|
| Mombasa, Kenya | 20โ24 days | 26โ32 days |
| Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | 22โ26 days | 28โ34 days |
Mombasa has a slight transit time advantage, partly because it serves as a transshipment hub in its own right โ some East Africa services connect through Colombo or Port Klang to Mombasa, which has more frequent direct service frequencies than Dar es Salaam. For the full transit picture, including how these compare to West Africa routing, see: Your Cargo Takes 45 Days from China.
Port Characteristics: Where Each One Stands
Mombasa โ Strengths
Higher container handling capacity. More frequent direct services from China. Kenya's National Electronic Single Window System (KESWS) has improved customs transparency. The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connection to Nairobi and Naivasha provides an alternative to road transport for inland cargo. Strong ICD (Inland Container Depot) infrastructure at Embakasi, Kisumu, and Eldoret.
Mombasa โ Constraints
Periodic port congestion linked to vessel bunching and berth availability. The Central Corridor to Uganda is longer from Mombasa than from Dar es Salaam. PVoC (Pre-Verification of Conformity) certification is required for regulated goods entering Kenya โ must be in place before loading in China. See: Pre-Import Verification Schemes.
Dar es Salaam โ Strengths
The preferred gateway for Central Africa via the Central Corridor โ shorter distance to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, and Zambia compared to Mombasa. Tanzania's port has benefited from significant infrastructure investment. Good rail connectivity through TAZARA and SGR phases for inland movement.
Dar es Salaam โ Constraints
Fewer direct China services than Mombasa โ more shipments involve transshipment, typically via Colombo or Port Klang, adding transit time. Berth waiting times can extend during peak periods. Tanzania also applies PVoC-equivalent requirements for certain regulated goods.
Customs Clearance: How Each Market Works
Kenya (Mombasa): Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) manages customs through the iCMS (integrated Customs Management System). Pre-arrival declaration submission is required. Kenya applies risk-based selectivity โ green lane releases without inspection, red lane requires examination. Mombasa has a well-developed clearing agent ecosystem, and experienced brokers can move routine shipments through clearance in 4 to 7 working days. For regulated goods, the HS code must be confirmed in advance โ KRA's classification is the basis for both duty assessment and PVoC applicability.
Tanzania (Dar es Salaam): Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) uses the TANCIS customs system. Import duties are assessed on CIF value. Tanzania applies East African Community (EAC) common external tariff rates for most product categories. A good broker in Dar es Salaam handles routine clearances in 5 to 9 working days, though first-time importers without established broker relationships often experience longer timelines. See: Why Your Cargo Is Stuck at Customs for the full clearance diagnostic.
Which Port for Which Final Destination
| Final Destination | Preferred Port | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi / Kenya domestic | Mombasa | SGR rail connection, strong ICD network |
| Kampala, Uganda | Mombasa or Dar es Salaam | Both corridors serve Uganda โ compare transit costs and time |
| Rwanda / Burundi | Dar es Salaam | Central Corridor shorter from Dar es Salaam |
| Eastern DRC | Dar es Salaam | Central Corridor access to eastern DRC via Tanzania |
| Lusaka, Zambia | Dar es Salaam | TAZARA rail and road via Tanzania more direct |
๐ Pro Tip: Don't make this decision on port alone. The total transit time includes clearance days at the port and road or rail transit to your inland destination. A cargo clearing faster at Mombasa may still arrive later in Kampala than the same cargo that took longer to clear in Dar es Salaam but travelled a shorter overland leg. Ask your forwarder for a door-to-door estimate to your specific city, not just a port-to-port one. See: Managing Demurrage and Detention for how to keep costs under control at whichever port you choose.
